We know the reason: my daughter dunked it in her mother's drink while it was on.
That was about a week ago, and since then we have purchased a replacement unit (same model) via eBay. It came yesterday, and when I returned home from the unexpected "job interview" (more on that shortly), we opened it and found everything looking sparkling.
There was just one problem: it didn't work.
Since
maya_a has the same model of phone, we tested all combinations of phone, battery, and charger against our known working models to determine what wasn't functioning. As it happens, the battery was shot; both the new charger and phone worked when combined with known good components.
The seller at eBay, who has lots of experience and highly positive feedback, is sending a new battery to replace this one. (We told her that we believe it was an honest oversight, and she made it good.) Now all we have to do is get that battery and call AT&T Wireless to reassign the phone to my number. And download some ringtones to restore the phone to its prior sounds. And reinstate the phonebook. And...
