Thanks greatly to [livejournal.com profile] sharan, I settled on Acronis TrueImage to back up the hard drive prior to migration. Having done so, I moved into the new box -- and promptly did something stupid that corrupted the boot partition such that the machine got into a loop, almost but not quite getting Windows up -- and rebooting. Safe Mode booted, but I couldn't delete the apparent offender (it was a Microsoft product, and greyed out the Delete option in Add/Remove Programs).

Half an hour later, I had rewritten the C drive with what existed prior to pulling the hard drive from the old machine. Another fifteen minutes and two reboots later, everything seemed to have been accounted for, drivers installed, et cetera.

Except for the video card (I'm running off the onboard graphics, because for some reason this machine doesn't want to acknowledge my card -- PCI, 128MB, and I prefer it to a 4MB onboard graphics share), the modem and network card (the latter two from the new system, not the original, and pulled for simplicity because I haven't identified them or hunted drivers; neither is required at the moment, without anything to network to, nor much desire to tie up the phone except when faxes are necessary).

Haven't slept since yesterday, either, which I am about to remedy.

See y'all later, from work.
