As mentioned by too many people to count, RIP Madeleine L'Engle, 1918-2007.

I grew up reading her books — I spent several essentially sleepless nights at eight years old after reading A Wrinkle In Time, and IT still ranks among the top villains ever in my mind — and am sorry that, although I keep discovering works of hers that I've never read, none now will ever be new again.
