Sep. 4th, 2008 07:36 amI'm thinking ahead to the upcoming Presidential debates and I wonder whether, in addition to the other preparation he's surely doing, Obama has considered learning some conversational Vietnamese for use at an appropriate moment. For example, after McSame invokes his five-plus years without even one kitchen table, Obama could turn to him and ask, in Vietnamese, how the five-planes lost pilot was doing, and would he like some water, or some other appropriate pleasantry. (Indications are that McCain never was waterboarded -- but it's not certain, as far as I can find, that he avoided that particular form of torture, which he voted to approve despite his experiences.) If done properly, it comes under the same sort of umbrella as formal, icy, politeness.
But what do I know, who's rarely polite?
