Let's review:

  • The Yankees acquire Lance Berkman for two minor leaguers, and Austin Kearns for a player to be named later.

  • The Yankees have the best record in baseball.

  • The Mets Deal Mike Jacobs for a player to be named later, acquire nobody.

  • The Mets are one game over .500, tied for sixth in the wildcard race (6 1/2 games out), and dropping fast.

Which GM is doing his job, and which needs desperately to become a marketing manager for a short-season team?

The non-waiver trade deadline is today. Does anyone think the Mets are going to do anything to improve their team? (Not me.)

Today the Yankees acquired Berkman, Kearns, and Kerry Wood. The Mets: Nada, zip, and zilch.

Also, the Dodgers acquired Ted Lilly and Ryan Theriot for virtually nothing. Meanwhile, the Mets, who had been talking to the Cubs about Lilly and who could use an upgrade at second base, got shut out (they did turn down an offer from the Cubs to exchange Carlos Zambrano for Ollie Perez straight up; given the huge amount of money Zambrano is owed for the rest of this season and the next two, I'm not surprised they refused, even if it was a chance to upgrade pitching AND dump Ollie).

It's time for the Mets to realize that their problem is Omar Minaya.
