Jun. 7th, 2005 10:50 amHave I mentioned recently that I really hate NYC sometimes?
As I anticipated on Sunday night, yesterday was a very long day indeed. We did in fact go see my son Z receive his second-place-in-grade science fair award. And forgot the camera :-( The defining moment came when Z was coming up the aisle to say hello to us, and his name was called to go pick up his project from the stage. He didn't hear it, but
maya_a and I did, and tried to convey with signs that he needed to go do that. He turned around al right, but didn't go get the project (we did, after the kids had left the auditorium, and we brought it home). And we apologized afterward, for pointing at the project and conveying what we realized later looked like "go away."
Home again, out again, this time to adopt Chester the cat. We were out of the house by 10:30 into the heat. Remember, the A/C in the car is non est, so M wanted to prepare coolth for all of us. She added water to her two cool ties (as seen here), we grabbed some cold water bottles, and out to the car we went.
Guess who forgot to listen to the traffic reports before driving? Guess whose radio is in need of a checkup (it seems the antenna's disconnected, as we get essentially one station, the big classic rock FM one). Guess who sat in traffic on the Queensboro (that's 59th Street, for you Simon and Garfunkel fans who didn't already know) Bridge for an hour or so.
Getting across Manhattan and into and out of the Lincoln Tunnel was actually pretty easy, and we did okay with the directions we'd been given. Called as directed, and the cat's owner was home, gardening a bit while he waited for us.
Chester's a big boy, and it's a good thing for us he was declawed in front as we tried to load him into the cat carrier. (I don't generally like declawing cats; in this case, though, he showed no inclination to bite.) Got him in, got him home, got out just in time to pick up Z at school. I came home and passed out for several hours, having by that time been awake for almost 24 hours.
Chester will be fine. He went to ground as cats will do in a new environment, but by the end of last night was not skittering away when gently approached where he lay under the table. He even allowed himself to be scritched some. I hope that by the end of the week he'll decide to join us out in the open, and will take pics and post them then. (But until then, imagine a gray and white boycat, fifteen or more pounds. Very pretty face, with a bolt of white down one side and onto half his nose. And his previous owner says he's a sleeping-with cat, too. I've missed that :-)
Got up, was slightly more human than zombie for online meeting. Went back to bed. Woke up still underslept this morning. Going out now to shop at warehouse store, and hopefully will nap this afternoon.
Okay. Onward and outward...
