Looking for Feedback or Assistance
Aug. 4th, 2005 11:24 amI have an odd software problem. I have WinAmp 2.62 installed as part of the Netscape 4.78 suite (under Win2KProSR4). I haven't cared to upgrade until now, for a number of reasons. Now I want to do so. But WinAmp 5.094 doesn't "see" the old version, which is installed in a folder inside /Program Files/Netscape -- it's apparently only looking for a prior folder directly under Program Files.
There's no uninstall link for the installed WinAmp, and Windows' Add/Remove Programs doesn't see it separately, either.
It seems to me that I might have to uninstall the Netscape suite (which I keep on the system for several reasons beyond WinAmp; no, it's not my primary browser -- that's Firefox 1.06). Besides being able to upgrade WinAmp, I could also upgrade AIM (which I only use a few times annually, to be sure), which is part of the suite, and then reinstall Netscape with only the core browser.
But that seems like a real PITA (saving all the critical bits from the current installation to replace back in, so settings and bookmarks -- admittedly, not much used these days; I said it wasn't a primary browser :-) -- don't get lost).
Of course, I could go the even sillier route. I have an old copy of Uninstaller (I think that's what it is; one of those commercial third-party jobs) that I could install, clear out WinAmp and AIM, and then uninstall Uninstaller.
Either way, I'm just looking for the simplest method to wind up with the upgrades in WinAmp and AIM installed, associated properly with filetypes (WinAmp), and the old versions cleaned out without leaving unfortunate fragments of themselves about. Feedback sought eagerly, with thanks in advance.
Please, no comments on how much easier this would be under other OSes; I'm sure it would be a matter of looking at my left big toe and it would be done, with sparkly sugar on top. I plan to get acquainted with Linux soon, but this machine is going to stay with Win2000, and I need to work within its constraints.
