Back online, intermittent outages
Oct. 6th, 2005 06:51 pmSo the computer died the other day. Spontaneous reboots, the works. For a short while, I could get it stable by booting into diagnostic mode. Then, splat!
Fortunately, I've been (VERY slowly) armoring the new machine (lots of tentativeness because of Windows XP; my first experience with it, after a long affair with Win2K). Got to the point where I'm willing to go with it.
The router (which has another layer of protection as a hardware firewall) won't set up. Any outages in the near future will be attempts to rectify this. (It's an SMC7004VBR Barricade, for the geekily inclined. My brother, whose it was, gave it to me; it's proving to be a problem after I release the IPCONFIG, not RENEWing. Yes, I have manually reset the bugger and powercycled it.) Needs to be fixed by Monday, if at all possible, so
maya_a can share the connection rather than pulling the plug here, to work.
Meanwhile, I'm plugged in directly, for the moment.
If I missed anything critical (yes,
tigerbright, I saw you sent e-mail. Will get to reading that stack'o'stuff after dinner), pointers are heartily welcomed.
Gracias.
