Aug. 6th, 2007 05:47 amFollowing up on my prior concerns about election machines in California, there's some good news: California decertified the machines in question. It's not wholly perfect; Debra Bowen, California secretary of state, will permit counties to use the machines in the February primary with additional security precautions, including audits of the results.
Not that those audits are likely to change anything; audits of prior elections have been contested and defeated in the courts, and, of course, by lack of evidence, to the point where I have no faith in them. Nevertheless, official acknowledgment of real problems with the machines is a start, and combined with Howard Dean making early standard-setting for the 2008 Federal elections a priority, I have hope that the next election will be fairer than the last two.
Now all we need is a decent candidate to win the Democratic nomination. (That is, not Hillary.) I'd wish for the same on the Republican side, but none of the current or prospective candidates in that field strikes me as decent, not to mention as a candidate for POTUS.
