redaxe: (Baseball with Mets)
This was a rough day for the Mets. First, the good news: the MRI taken on Carlos Delgado's hip (the one that cost him the last three weeks of the season in 2007 -- you know, the three weeks where they surrendered a seven-game lead?) was negative. Presumably, that means he has a chance to be ready to start the season, if he can regain his health and maintain it. Not as easy as it was, when he's 37. But possible, nonetheless.

The bad news: in a collision on a popup in right field, new right fielder Ryan Church was diagnosed with a Grade 2 concussion. Marlon Anderson, with whom he collided, seems to be mostly okay.

I'd already thought the Mets' bench was kind of awful. If they have to go with Endy Chavez in the outfield, and Jose Valentin, Olmedo Saenz, Fernando Tatis, or Ben Johnson at first base, they swiftly move from pennant favorites to seriously flawed underdogs (despite the talent remaining). Where was Omar Minaya over the winter when it came to signing decent bench players? It's not as if he didn't know that Delgado had been injured and might be so again.

Here's a solution, Omar: go get an outfielder or two. Kenny Lofton and *shudder* Corey Patterson are still out there as free agents. Matt Murton can be had from Chicago. Either way, teach Moises Alou the rudiments of first base, and get him some games there. (Gods know, it might save him some DL time, too. Unless he manages to step in front of someone; that's a good old-fashioned Mets trick)

The alternative is Scott Hatteberg or Scott Spiezio. Bleah.
